
Annual Art Student Exhibition opens this month

KALAMAZOO -- This year's edition of the annual Art Student
Exhibition runs from March 20 to April 2 in the Dalton Center
Multimedia Room. Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday, 10
a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Awards Ceremony for the student exhibition is Monday,
March 25, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Dalton Center Recital Hall.
The exhibition ,awards ceremony and reception that follows are
free and open to the public.
Featured at the awards ceremony will be three art alumni,
Tiit Telmet, Jan Yager, and Mike Sims, who also will be inducted
into the new Art Alumni Academy. During the ceremony, Yager will
give an illustrated talk titled, "A Closer Look."
Don Desmett, director of collections and exhibitions at the
Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, was the judge for the 2002 student
exhibition. Prior to coming to the KIA in 2000, Desmett was executive
director of the Art Center of Battle Creek, Mich., as well as
it's main curator for two years. From 1990-98, he was director
and curator of the Tyler Galleries at the Tyler School of Art
of Temple University in Philadelphia. Also, he was art gallery
director at Cleveland State University from 1986 to 1990 and
director of exhibitions at Gallery G in Pittsburgh, 1984-86.
