WMU's top scholar-athletes recognized

May 3, 2002

KALAMAZOO -- Senior Kylie Schultz and junior Ryan Maarschalk have been named Western Michigan University's outstanding female and male scholar-athletes for 2001-02.

The Outstanding Scholar-Athlete Awards, considered the most prestigious honor in Bronco athletics, recognize the male and female varsity letter winner with the highest cumulative grade-point average. The WMU Alumni Association sponsors the annual awards, which are presented by the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Kylie Schultz of Clare, Mich., was a member of the women's cross country and track and field teams. She also won as a sophomore in 1999-2000 and is the first two-time female recipient of the Outstanding Scholar-Athlete Award. An art major, Schultz carries a 3.96 overall grade-point average and has been included on the dean's list her entire academic career.

This past indoor track and field season, Schultz took home individual titles in the 3,000 meters at the Ball State Triangular, clocking WMU's fastest time of the season at 10:10.41 and claimed state bragging rights in the 5,000 meters at the Michigan Intercollegiates. She is expected to finish her career at WMU with 10 varsity letters, four in cross country, two in indoor track and four in outdoor track.

Ryan Maarschalk of Harae, Zimbabwe, is a three-time letter winner and co-captain on the men's tennis team. He is a biomedical science major, maintains a 3.91 overall GPA and has been included on the dean's list every semester enrolled at WMU.

Playing primarily at the No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles positions, Maarschalk finished with 40 wins during the just-completed tennis season, good for second on the team. He also had a strong Mid-American Conference tournament, finishing the event with a 3-1 overall record. He currently ranks No. 26 on the WMU all-time wins list with 112 career victories. Maarshalk was also recently named to the All-MAC Second Team.
