Gary Athletic Fund drive underway
April 21, 2003
KALAMAZOO -- The 2003 Mike Gary Athletic Fund drive began
April 16 with the goal of raising $775,000 to support Western
Michigan University's 20 men's and women's varsity teams.
A group of about 40 volunteers are soliciting donations by
telephone through May 1. Funds raised are used to provide scholarships,
to enhance recruiting budgets and for equipment purchases. Chairing
the 49th annual drive is Charlie Miller, a retired State Farm
agent and a long-time Gary Fund volunteer. Assisting Miller is
chair-elect Fred Sitkins, a professor in the College of Engineering
and Applied Sciences.
"I've been watching the Broncos since 1954, when I first
came to town, and have worked with the Gary Fund for more than
20 years," said Miller. "We've always been able to
meet our goals in the past, and I'm looking forward to working
with the committee and volunteers in meeting this year's goal."
