
Frederika Girsang is MAC Player of the Year

KALAMAZOO -- Frederika Girsang and Melanie Peters, members
of the women's tennis team at Western Michigan University, earned
all-conference recognition at the Mid-American Conference awards
banquet April 24.
Girsang, a junior from Jakarta, Indonesia, was named the MAC
Player of the Year and was also placed on the All-MAC first team.
She is the first player at Western Michigan to earn MAC Player
of the Year award since its creation in 1998. Girsang has earned
All-MAC honors each of her three seasons at WMU. This season,
she was a perfect 8-0 at No. 1 singles for the Broncos in MAC
competition. Girsang also was 7-1 in MAC doubles play, mostly
from the No. 1 position. For the season, she was 31-9 in singles
and 29-12 in doubles. Her 60 combined wins is a WMU record, surpassing
the 58-win record season of Kendrah Becker in 2000.
Peters, a senior from Portage, Mich., was named to the All-MAC
Second Team, marking the first time in her career she has receive
all-conference recognition. She has earned a career-high 49 victories
this season, playing mostly from the No. 2 singles and No. 1
doubles position. Her career win total now stands at 174, which
places her sixth on the Western Michigan all-time wins list.
Peters won 29 doubles matches this season, fourth on the single-season
list at WMU. In MAC play, Peters was 4-3 in singles and 6-1 in
doubles. Overall, she was 20-17 in singles and 29-11 in doubles.
WMU was eliminated in the semi-final round of the MAC tournament
and finished with a 15-9 overall record. and a 7-2 record in
MAC regular season play.
