
Biological science award recipients announced

KALAMAZOO -- Fourteen students were recently honored by Western
Michigan University's Department of Biological Sciences for their
scholarly achievements. The students received their awards at
the department's spring luncheon.
2003 Biological Science Award Recipients
Katie M. Boyle of Rochester Hills, Mich., received
the Frank Hinds Zoology Award, a $250 award given in honor of
Frank Hinds, a dedicated teacher who served WMU for 35 years.
The award involves a research or service project in the field
of zoology.
Eric Dziuban of Kalamazoo, a pre-professional biological
sciences major, received a $200 award for his selection by faculty
as the outstanding biology or biomedical sciences major in a
pre-professional curriculum. Students must have a minimum grade
point average of 3.5.
Marla A. Fisher of Kalamazoo, a biology graduate student,
received a $200 award based on her completion of the requirements
for a master of arts degree in biology within the last year and
for outstanding research productivity.
Bethany R. Huot of Kalamazoo received the Colin J.
Gould Memorial Scholarship, a $500 award given to a Lee Honors
College student majoring in the biological sciences. This award
was established as a memorial to the late student Colin J. Gould.
Kory Johnson of Portage, Mich., a senior in biomedical
sciences, received a $200 award given to the outstanding senior
biomedical sciences major with a minimum grade point average
of 3.5.
Katrina A. Kuipers of Battle Creek, Mich., received
the Hazel Wirick Scholarship, a $1,000 award given by the Federated
Garden Clubs of Michigan Foundation to an upper-level biology
major with a project in the area of botany or ecology. Student
recipients of the award must have a minimum grade point average
of 3.5.
May Ping Zarraz Lee of Kalamazoo was awarded the Merrill
Wiseman Award in Microbiology. The scholarship carries a $200
prize named in honor of Merrill Wiseman, a distinguished professor
who was on WMU's biological sciences faculty for forty years.
The award is given to an outstanding student in the field of
microbiology.
Amanda Moore of Quincy, Mich., received the Margaret
Thomas DuMond Award, a $500 award given to an upper-level biology
or biomedical sciences major who has demonstrated outstanding
potential for a career in biological sciences. Student recipients
of the award must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0.
The award honors WMU alumna Margaret Thomas DuMond.
Andrew J. Powers of Plymouth, Mich., a senior in biology,
received a $200 award given to the outstanding senior biology
major with a minimum grade point average of 3.5.
Bertha Rebimbas-Cohen of Mattawan, Mich., a biomedical
sciences graduate, received a $200 award given to a student who
has completed the requirements for a master of arts degree in
biomedical sciences within the last year and who has shown outstanding
research productivity.
April R. Reedy of Parchment, Mich., was awarded the
Edwin B. Steen Book Award, a $100 award given to a student to
use for the purchase of books. This is a memorial award named
for Edwin B. Steen a former faculty member in the Department
of Biological Sciences.
Talline R. Robadey of Kalamazoo was awarded the Hazel

Lauren M. Sheill of Clinton, Mich., a senior in biomedical
sciences received a $200 award, which is given to an outstanding
senior biomedical sciences major with a minimum grade point average
of 3.5.
Cathryn Elizabeth Whately of Mt. Pleasant, Mich., was
awarded the Leo C. Vander Beek Graduate Student in Plant Biology
Award. The scholarship carries a $500 award given to a beginning
graduate student in plant biology. It is awarded in memory of
late Leo C. Vander Beek, who was a distinguished faculty member
in the Department of Biological Sciences for 33 years.
