
Trustees approve retirements
July 16, 2003
KALAMAZOO -- The retirements of seven faculty members and
five staff members were approved by the Western Michigan University
Board of Trustees at its July 16 meeting. Trustees also accepted
the resignations of 11 faculty members and two staff members.
Six of the faculty members who are retiring are doing so with
emeriti status. Their names, years of continuous service and
effective dates of retirement are: JoNina M. Abron, associate
professor of communication, 13 1/2 years, effective Dec. 30,
2003; Arthur W. Hoadley, professor of mechanical and aeronautical
engineering, 28 1/2 years, effective April 11, 2004; Dr. Elise
B. Jorgens, interim provost and formerly dean of the College
of Arts and Sciences, 26 1/2 years, effective June 8, 2003; Dr.
Robert R. Laing, professor of mathematics, 33 years, effective
June 30, 2003; Dr. Edward J. Mayo, professor of marketing, 22
years, effective Aug. 8, 2004; and Dr. Thomas Sill, associate
professor of communication, 36 1/2 years, effective April 30,
2004.
The other retiring faculty member is Kathi Fuller, faculty
specialist II in the School of Community Health Services, 12
years, effective June 30, 2003.
The staff members retiring are: Steven T. Berger, coordinator
of aviation compliance and logistics in the College of Aviation,
32 years, effective May 31, 2003, (new retirement date); Frances
J. Jess, utility food worker in Dining Services, 12 1/2 years,
effective June 30, 2003; David D. Lake, a custodian in Building,
Custodial and Support Services, 29 1/2 years, effective May 31,
2003; Richard L. Piper, director of logistical services, 31 1/2
years, effective May 30, 2003; and Sarah Williams, a custodian
in Building, Custodial and Support Services, 12 1/2 years, effective
June 30, 2003.
The faculty members resigning are: Wendy L. Babcox, assistant
professor of art, effective Aug. 3, 2003; Dr. Steven T. Benfell,
assistant professor of political science, effective Aug. 3, 2003;
Scott A. Bristol, aviation specialist in the College of Aviation,
effective March 30, 2003; Dr. Timothy Diamond, associate professor
of sociology, effective Aug. 3, 2003; Dr. Ruth A. Ervin, associate
professor of psychology, effective Aug. 3, 2003; Dr. Michael
K. Kinyon, associate professor of mathematics, effective April
14, 2003; Dr. Tracey Mabrey, associate professor of social work,
effective Aug. 3, 2003; L. Scott Marsh, associate professor of
dance, effective June 22, 2003; Dr. Susanne Mrozik, assistant
professor of comparative religion, effective Aug. 3, 2003; Dr.
Haesun Park, assistant professor of family and consumer sciences,
effective Aug. 3, 2003; Dr. Mary C. Schutten, assistant professor
of health, physical education and recreation, effective Aug.
3, 2003.
The staff members resigning are: James Barrowman, chief JOC
instructor in the College of Aviation, effective May 30, 2003,
and Robert McCullum, head men's basketball coach, effective April
20, 2003.
