Trustees to discuss life sciences in special meeting
July 28, 2003
KALAMAZOO -- Western Michigan University's Board of Trustees
will convene by phone in a special conference call meeting set
for 8:45 a.m. Wednesday, July 30.
WMU President Judith I. Bailey and members of her administration
will meet in the Connable Board Room in the Bernhard Center to
take part in the conference call meeting with board members,
which will be called to order by Birgit Klohs, chairperson of
the board. The meeting is open to the public.
Board members will discuss the establishment of a Biosciences
Research and Commercialization Center at WMU as well as the creation
of a research foundation at the University.
Earlier this month, both houses of the Michigan legislature
approved supplemental funding of $10 million to be used to launch
a Bioscience Research and Commercialization Center in Kalamazoo
County. The legislation is awaiting the signature of Gov. Jennifer
Granholm. Such an entity would be a national center that would
utilize Michigan's pharmaceutical development skills to support
commercialization of discoveries in the life sciences.
