
William O. Haynes

William O. Haynes, a founding member of Western Michigan University's
food marketing faculty, died Aug 12 in Kalamazoo.
An associate professor emeritus in consumer resources and
technology, Haynes retired in 1984 after 25 years of service
to the University. He was instrumental in developing the Food
Distribution Program at WMU, now part of the respected Food Marketing
Program. A charter member of the American Food Distribution Research
Society, Haynes was a frequent speaker at food conferences around
the nation and served as a consultant to supermarkets in the
United States and Japan. In 2000, the Michigan Food and Beverage
Association named him as one of the top 100 food and beverage
industry leaders of the past century.
Haynes earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at WMU and
undertook doctoral studies at Michigan State University. Prior
to becoming a faculty member at his alma mater, he worked for
15 years as a supermarket owner and manager.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15,
at First United Methodist Church, 212 S. Park St., Kalamazoo.
Contributions in his memory may be made to the First United Methodist
Church or to the William O. Haynes Scholarship, in WMU's Food
