Second edition of undergraduate journal debuts
Sept. 9, 2003
KALAMAZOO -- Western Michigan University students will launch
the second issue of the University's only undergraduate literary
journal with a reading Friday, Sept. 12.
The community is invited to an open reading from The Laureate
at 6:30 p.m. in the lounge of the Lee Honors College. Several
authors will read from their published works and the audience
is also invited to read their favorites from the 2002-03 issue
of the journal.
First published during the 2001-02 academic year, The Laureate
showcases poetry, artwork and short stories from WMU undergraduates.
Some 37 poems and three short stories appear in the 78-page 2002-03
issue, which will be debuted at the reading. Beginning this week,
copies of The Laureate are available at a number of locations
around campus and at the Lee Honors College.
The journal is sponsored by the Lee Honors College, and Margaret
von Steinen, assistant to the coordinator of WMU's creative writing
program, serves as advisor. Senior Melissa Matlewski, a special
education major and honors college member, served as editor for
the 2002-03 edition.
Submissions for the 2003-04 issue of The Laureate are being
accepted through Oct. 17. Submission forms and details are available
at the honors college.
