Campus Classic runners could park free next year
Oct. 8, 2003
KALAMAZOO -- Three "W" student parking stickers
for the 2004-05 academic year have been donated as door prizes
for the 2003 Campus Classic, this Saturday's race through campus.
Bob Beam, vice president for business and finance, and WMU
Parking Services donated the three stickers, valued at $300 each,
for the Oct. 11 event that will kick off Homecoming Saturday
with a 1K Fun Walk and Run and a 5K Walk and Run through the
campus. Prizewinners will be selected by random drawing during
the post-race brunch and awards ceremony, which will be held
in a tent near Kanley Chapel.
"This is a great incentive for students to register for
the race and get some additional mileage out of what's already
a great homecoming event," says Matt Kurz, associate vice
president for university relations whose office coordinates the
Campus Classic. "Three lucky students will enjoy the fun
of the race on Saturday and keep that grin going all of next
year."
In addition to the three parking stickers, this year's door
prizes also include a $500 travel voucher from AAA Travel and
a number of other certificates and pieces of merchandise.
Race registration will continue until 9 a.m. Saturday, but
race fees increase for those who register Friday or Saturday.
For students who register by the end of the day Thursday, Oct.
9, the registration fee is $10. The fee increases to $15 for
students who wait to register on Friday or Saturday. College
student teams of three to five persons can register for $25 through
Thursday or $30 on Friday and Saturday.
Students can register in person through Thursday at the Office
of University Relations, 300 E. Walwood Hall. Registration teams
also will be stationed at Gazelle Sports on the mall in downtown
Kalamazoo from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday.
Final on-site will take place in Room 105 of the Bernhard
Center from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 7 to 8:30 a.m. Saturday,
with the registration area closing at 9 a.m. All registered participants
will receive a race T-shirt, complimentary brunch and snacks.
The 5K race is run on a certified course with ChampionChip
timing. The race also uses volunteers in a variety of roles.
Volunteers who register online by midnight Thursday also receive
T-shirts and are eligible for door prizes.
