
Merling Trio and Tom Knific perform at Dalton

KALAMAZOO--The Merling Trio will perform with bassist Tom
Knific in a Faculty Artist Series concert at 8:15 p.m. Saturday,
Feb. 21, in the Dalton Center Recital Hall.
General admission tickets for the Merling Trio and Tom Knific
are $10. Students and senior citizens pay $5. Tickets will be
available at the door, but advance purchases are recommended
and may be made through the Miller Auditorium Ticket Office at
(269) 387-2300 or toll free (800) 228-9858.
The conert will feature performances of Haydn's early "Trio
in A-flat Major," Hob. XV:14; Smetana's highly emotional
and expressive "Trio in G minor," Op. 15; and the WMU
premiere of American composer Frank Proto's "Quartet for
Piano and String Bass."
The Merling Trio was founded in 1988 and quickly established
itself as a premiere WMU faculty ensemble. Known both for successful
commissions of works by contemporary composers and interpretations
of the standard repertoire, their live concert performances are
broadcast widely on both radio and television, including a recent
live broadcast over Chicago's WFMT.
The Cleveland Plain Dealer said of the Merling Trio's musical
artistry, "The players shaped a grand interpretation, fluent
in rhythm and rich in romantic feeling."
The Merling Trio features WMU School of Music faculty members
Renata Artman Knific, violin; Bruce Uchimura, cello; and Susan
Wiersma Uchimura, piano.
