Evening concert highlights jazz festival

KALAMAZOO--Legendary jazz trombonist Slide Hampton is the featured guest artist at the 24th annual Western Invitational Jazz Festival at Western Michigan University Saturday, March 13.

Jazz bands and combos from high schools in northern Indiana and Michigan will compete in the day-long festival, which is coordinated by Trent Kynaston and sponsored by the Jazz Studies area in the School of Music and the Delta Iota Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. Groups compete for the honor of being named "Outstanding Band" and "Outstanding Combo" of the festival, and winners will perform in the evening concert.

Performances begin at 8:20 a.m. in the Dalton Center Recital Hall. At 3:30 p.m., there will be a performance featuring Slide Hampton with the Western Jazz Quartet, trumpeter Scott Cowan, and drummer Billy Hart, which will be followed by a clinic presentation.

The festival concludes with a 7:30 p.m. concert featuring the outstanding high school big band and combo from the day's performances, followed by the University Jazz Orchestra, directed by Scott Cowan, and Slide Hampton.

Admission for the evening concert is $10. General admission tickets will be on sale at the door and are also available in advance from the Miller Auditorium Ticket Office at 269 387-2300 or toll free 800 228-9858.
