Finals Finish seeks volunteers; plans Porter tribute
April 1, 2004
KALAMAZOO--Members of the Western Michigan University faculty, staff and administration are asked to help students ease into finals week by volunteering at the eighth annual Finals Finish from 6 to 10 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, April 19-20, in the Student Recreation Center.
Volunteers are asked to sign up for either Monday or Tuesday for a two-hour block of time from 6 to 8 p.m. or 8 to 10 p.m. During their shifts, volunteers help distribute snacks, work registration, gather evaluations and lead games and activities. Those volunteering will receive a free Finals Finish T-shirt and a guest pass to the recreation center, as will donors who contribute $25 or more.
Amy Seth, SRC, says this year's event will pay tribute to the late Tamara L. "Tami" Porter, a retired staff member who died this past February. Porter, a budget officer, had retired in April 2002 after 33 years with the University.
"Tami was part of the original team that organized Finals Finish, and she continued to serve on the planning committee into her retirement from WMU," Seth says. "She was a dear friend and co-worker. During Finals Finish, her friends will be able to remember her in various ways."
Noting that Porter cheered up numerous colleagues by giving them stuffed animals, Seth says one way to pay tribute to Porter will be to bring some of those animals. or new or gently used stuffed toys, to Finals Finish for later donation to Family and Children's Services and the WMU Unified Clinic's Children Trauma Assessment Center.
In addition, Seth says people may dedicate their volunteer shifts to Porter by signing in on a special board that will display remembrances of her as well as make cash donations in Porter's name to Finals Finish, which is facing financial challenges--just like many other campus programs.
"Tami's family is so touched by this tribute that one of her nieces in Bay City is planning on making the trip to Kalamazoo to take part in Finals Finish," Seth adds. "She would love to meet many of Tami's friends while she's here."
