Men's tennis team, coach sweep MAC honors

April 27, 2004

KALAMAZOO--Western Michigan University's men's tennis team, 2004 Mid-American Conference regular season and tournament champions, made up a majority of the all-league teams and postseason honors.

WMU senior Ravi Pathanjali claimed the MAC Player of the Year award, freshman Brady Crosby was tabbed Newcomer of the Year and Dave Morin claimed Coach of the Year accolades. Pathanjali and junior Tommy Dennis were selected to the All-MAC First Team and sophomore Jose Orozco and Crosby earned spots on the All-MAC Second Team.

"We had a very good year as a team because of some outstanding individual performances," Morin said. "It's rewarding for the program to see our guys receive some recognition for their accomplishments."

The 2001 MAC Newcomer of the Year, Pathanjali has claimed All-MAC honors in each of his four seasons. A second team selection as a freshman, he has now earned a position on the first team in each of his last three seasons. Pathanjali still has a chance to become the school's all-time winningest player.

Crosby clinched the MAC Tournament title with a victory at No. 4 singles. He was undefeated (5-0) in league singles play and also posted a pair of wins in the league tourney. He currently owns an overall singles mark of 25-9.

Morin, in his eighth season at WMU, was named MAC Coach of the Year for the third time while guiding the Bronco program. He also garnered the honor in 1994 while at Bowling Green. Under Morin's leadership, the Broncos have advanced to the NCAA Championships three times in the past six seasons. Morin is the second WMU coach to receive MAC Coach of the Year honors for 2003-04. Chris Karwoski won the award for men's soccer.

A second team selection in 2002-03, Dennis saw a majority of his action at No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles. With another year of eligibility, Dennis will continue to move up the career wins ladder he already finds his name on. Coming off a record-setting freshman campaign, Orozco claimed all-league accolades for the first time. He completed the MAC schedule with a 5-0 record in singles and also teamed up with three fellow Broncos to conclude the conference regular season undefeated in doubles as well.
