Bronco golfers and coach earn MAC honors

April 28, 2004

KALAMAZOO--Western Michigan University's Cindy Trout was named the Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year in women's golf earlier this week after leading the Broncos to their best-ever finish at the MAC Championship, along with the lowest score in the team's brief history.

Two WMU students also earned all-conference honors. Junior Stephanie Donkin from Edson, Alberta, was selected to the All-MAC First Team, and Jenna Walter, a sophomore from Burton, Mich., was named to the all-league second team.

Trout has served as head coach of WMU's women's golf team since its inception in 1998 and has brought the team increasing success each season. At the April 23-25 MAC Championship, held at Walden Ponds golf course in Indian Springs, Ohio, Trout guided the Broncos to a second-place finish with a team total of 920 strokes. WMU was the nominal host of this year's tournament, which is always played at a neutral site.

Perennial league champion Kent State University finished 18 strokes ahead of WMU, the narrowest margin of victory for Kent State in its six consecutive championships. Three Broncos finished in the top 10 at the league tournament. Walter and Lindsay Dunigan finished in a tie for fifth-place, and Erin Thorne finished in 10th-place.

Trout has been a class "A" member of the Professional Golfer's Association since 1988. She has previously served as head golf professional at the Shoal Creek Golf Center in Kansas City, Mo., and at the Loch Lloyd Country Club in Belton, Mo., home to the Senior PGA Tour's Southwestern Bell Classic. Other previous positions include head teaching professional at Crystal Mountain Resort in Michigan and a variety of roles at Alma College, including assistant athletic director for women, assistant women's basketball coach and head softball coach.

Trout earned a bachelor's degree in history at Alma College in 1980 and a master's degree in physical education at Central Michigan University in 1983.
