Women's tennis players and coach get MAC honors

May 10, 2004

KALAMAZOO--Two players from Western Michigan University's women's tennis team received Mid-American Conference all-league honors, and Betsy Kuhle was selected as the MAC Co-Coach of the Year. Voting for the awards was done by the league's head coaches.

Senior Frederika Girsang was named to the All-MAC First Team for the third time in her career and also claimed the Leann Grimes Davidge Sportsmanship Award. Freshman Carrie Jeanmaire earned a spot on the All-MAC Second Team.

Girsang is the program's all-time leader in total victories. She was also tabbed to the first team as a freshman and a junior, was named to the second team as a sophomore. She claimed the MAC Player of the Year Award in 2003 after posting a 60-21 overall record, including an 8-0 record in MAC singles action.

Jeanmaire, who saw the majority of her action at No. 2 singles, posted a 7-2 league record. She finished 26-13 overall and dropped just one of her doubles match ups.

Kuhle's recognition as one of the top coaches in the MAC marks the fourth time in her career she has received the accolade. She was previously named Coach of the Year in 1990, 1995 and 1997. The Broncos have finished no-lower than third in the league standings since Kuhle's arrival at WMU in 1983.
