Writer Mayra Montero reads from her works

Sept. 22, 2004

KALAMAZOO--Caribbean journalist and novelist Mayra Montero will read from her works Monday, Sept. 27, at 5 p.m. in Room 1021 of Brown Hall at Western Michigan University.

Montero's presentation, which is coordinated through the Department of Spanish, will be in both English and Spanish. The Cuban-born writer is best known for her 2000 work "Purpura Profundo," considered by critics to be among the best examples of Caribbean literature written in Spanish. Her journalistic experiences in Central America and the Caribbean inspired her narrative writing, which includes two short story collections and eight novels, two of them literary awards finalists.

For more information about Montero's visit to campus, contact, Dr. Irma Lopez, associate professor of Spanish, at (269) 387-3040.
