Race is on for Campus Classic volunteers

Oct. 1, 2004

KALAMAZOO--The race is on--not the presidential race, but the 2004 Campus Classic race. And you don't have to run to be part of the fun.

The Campus Classic 5K race and 1K fun run and walk is a great way to get into the Homecoming spirit at Western Michigan University. Every year, more than 300 volunteers help to stage one of Homecoming's most exciting events, attracting some 1,500 runners to the WMU campus. This year's race is Oct. 16, with the 1K fun run and walk starting at 8:15 a.m. and the 5K race beginning at 9 a.m. in front of the Bernhard Center.

For working the event, volunteers will receive a free T-shirt, drinks and snacks and a chance to win valuable prizes, including a $500 voucher from AAA Travel good for any flight in the continental United States. Students in particular will be interested in the chance to win one of 10 free WMU parking passes. Students also can receive community service letters by volunteering.

"Volunteering is a great way to be part of the action, while also enjoying the scenic beauty of our campus," says WMU Associate Vice President for University Relations Matt Kurz, whose office coordinates the event. "Those who have joined us before say it's a fun way to kick off Homecoming day, and the energy and excitement it generates makes it enjoyable for everyone who attends."

Volunteers are needed to act as course marshals, finish-line reporters, race registration helpers, logistics team members, food tent workers, water stop attendants and to hand out T-shirts and bibs to runners. Volunteers should be 15 or older, but families with younger children are welcome if an adult is present. Most volunteers will work between 6 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.

Signing up to volunteer is easy. Just visit the race Web site at <www.wmich.edu/race> or call the WMU Office of University Relations at (269) 387-8400. For more information, call Mark Schwerin, volunteer coordinator, at (269) 387-8413.
