SIS offline this weekend, new services available Monday

April 13, 2005

KALAMAZOO--The new student information system at Western Michigan University--including course registration--will be unavailable from 5 p.m. Friday, April 15, to 8 a.m. Monday, April 18. The system will be offline to allow the addition of an important new student service.

Beginning Monday, April 18, students will have an improved online account information system available through GoWMU. It will allow Web viewing of bills, statements, tuition invoices and account activity. Through the new system, payments can be made as before via credit card or by using a new option, electronic checks. As new student account statements are added to the system in the future, previous statements will be archived and available for students to view.

"This is a feature our students and families have been asking for from WMU. We are excited to be able to offer these added services," says Patti VanWalbeck, director of accounting services.

To find the new account information system beginning Monday, students should go to the Academic & Account Services Channel on the Home tab in GoWMU. Through the Academic & Account Services Channel, students may designate others as "authorized users" who can view account information and make payments. These authorized users--typically parents or family members--will be notified by e-mail that they can access the system, and they will receive monthly e-mails when statements are available. Authorized users will access information at a separate, secure Web site, not through GoWMU.

"The move to put student payment and account information in GoWMU significantly increases the value and convenience of GoWMU for our students." says Dr. James Gilchrist, SIS project director. "Providing better service for our students is the whole reason for GoWMU and the new student information system."

Financial service specialists are available during normal business hours at (269) 387-6000 to assist with questions about information on student accounts.

The Web and telephone systems now in use for student account information and payments will be permanently discontinued at 5 p.m. Friday, April 15.
