WMU invites adults to "Return to Learn"

Nov. 16, 2005

KALAMAZOO--Western Michigan University will hold a special event for working-age adults interested in earning a college degree from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 21, in the East Ballroom of the Bernhard Center at the center of WMU's main campus.

Timed to coincide with Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm's November "Return to Learn" campaign, the event will allow potential students a chance to meet with representatives of all of WMU's academic colleges as well as staff members from such areas as admissions, financial aid and registration. The event is for anyone interested in pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree.

"This will be a chance for people to talk informally with members of the University community, pose questions about programs and pick up enrollment materials," says John Beacon, vice provost for enrollment management. "We want people to drop in anytime between 6 and 8 p.m., and stay for as long as it takes to get answers to their questions."

The casual setting is intended bring all of the offices important to students' decision-making process together in one place to make it easy for students to gather the information they need about attending WMU. Those who wish to bring transcripts or other background information should plan to do so. Light refreshments will be served.

Granholm has designated the month of November as "Return to Learn" month, a time to encourage adults who may have earned some college credit to return to the classroom and complete a degree program. Throughout the month, colleges and universities in Michigan are making an extra effort to assist those who are thinking about coming back to campus to finish their degrees. Granholm's Web site, www.michigan.gov/gov, will link prospective students to more than 25 participating colleges and universities in Michigan. Participating schools are helping students develop individualized "Return to Learn" plans that can guide them to degree completion.
