Affirmative action defender speaks Thursday

KALAMAZOO--A leader in the effort to defend affirmative action will be making a presentation from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 6, in Western Michigan University's Fetzer Center.

The presentation by Shanta Driver, national director of the United for Equality and Affirmative Action Legal Defense Fund, is free and open to the public. It is being sponsored by WMU's Division of Multicultural Affairs and its Office of Institutional Equity.

Driver is an attorney and was the legal architect of the successful student intervention in the University of Michigan case, Grutter v. Bollinger.

She also serves as the co-chair and national spokesperson for By Any Means Necessary. BAMN is a national organization dedicated to building a new mass civil rights movement to defend affirmative action, integration and other gains of the civil rights movement of the 1960s and to advance the struggle for equality in American society by any means necessary.
