New Issues editor receives Emerging Artist Grant

Oct. 4, 2006

KALAMAZOO--Marianne Swierenga, managing editor of Western Michigan University's New Issues Poetry and Prose, has received an Emerging Artist Grant funded by the Irving S. Gilmore Foundation and administered by the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo.

Swierenga was one of five Kalamazoo County artists to receive the award. The quarterly grant program provides up to $4,000 in financial support for artists in the county who demonstrate serious commitment to advancing their work and professional careers. A panel of volunteer artists representing various arts disciplines makes application reviews and funding decisions.

Swierenga will use her grant of $2,743 to attend the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts to finish a collection of essays. She has been working with New Issues Poetry and Prose, a literary publisher through WMU, since 2000. She received her master's in creative writing from WMU in 2002 and her undergraduate degree from Hope College in 1999.

Other artists receiving Emerging Artist Grants were Gretchen Huggett, Patrick Roberts, Meghann Tang and Kathy O. Kreager.
