Tony-award winning musical staged in Shaw

Nov. 3, 2006

KALAMAZOO--Celebrating its 100th season, University Theatre at Western Michigan University presents seven performances of Stephen Sondheim's Tony-award winning musical, "A Little Night Music," Thursday, Nov. 9, through Sunday, Nov. 19.

Performances in Shaw Theatre begin at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 9-11 and 16-18, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 19.

An elegant, lyric story of mismatched lovers, misplaced loyalties and faith in oneself, "A Little Night Music" won Tony awards for Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book and features the classic "Send in the Clowns" among other recognizable tunes.

"A Little Night Music" features the scenic design of WMU alumnus and guest artist Paul Kelly. Fresh from overseeing the final production design on "The Phantom of the Opera" at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas, Kelly's work has been seen by audiences throughout Europe, and he has worked extensively in Hollywood, including art direction for the "The Thomas Crown Affair."

Direction and musical staging for "A Little Night Music" is by Jay Berkow, WMU director of music theatre performance, and the cast includes students Justin Goodemoot, Chelsea Rogers, Allison Hendrix, Kate Rasmussen and Paul Luoma. The creative team includes David Little, music director; Ellen Rouleau, stage manager; Kathleen MacKenzie, costumer; Zachary S. Law, lighting designer; and Palmer F. Jankens, sound designer.

Tickets for University Theatre productions can be purchased by calling (269) 387-6222 or by visiting the Gilmore Theatre Complex Ticket Office weekdays between noon and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
