Detailed course information available to all

KALAMAZOO--Western Michigan University has made it easier for prospective students and community members who are interested in taking classes to explore the breadth and depth of its offerings.
The University now offers its schedule of courses in a format that makes comprehensive information accessible to the public. The new online tool offers a more intuitive user interface. It allows anyone to quickly locate, from anywhere in the world with Internet access, information on the classes being offered at the main Kalamazoo campus as well as each of WMU's eight branch campuses. The schedule also includes a listing of all online courses.
"For the first time, complete course descriptions are connected to the course offerings online, so anyone thinking about taking a class can see what's available and find out what each course is about," says WMU Registrar Barbara McKinney. "The transparency equips prospective students and their families with the level of information they need to make sound decisions about their education."
Visitors can look for WMU courses based on campus location, subject, course number or instructor. Each search returns course descriptions, formats, instructional methods and any additional fees, as well as the days, times and locations of class meetings. Real-time enrollment figures reveal the class size and number of seats left in each section.
McKinney stresses that although the new service offers an online view of available courses, it does not link to registration. Course registration must still be done through the University's secure intranet portal, GoWMU, only after a student has applied and been admitted to the University.
