"Lars and the Real Girl" is fund-raiser for WIDR

March 18, 2008

KALAMAZOO--Kalamazoo Film Society presents the Oscar-nominated comedy "Lars and the Real Girl," starring Ryan Gosling and Kelli Garner, Friday through Sunday, March 21-23, in the Little Theatre at Western Michigan University.

KFS is sponsoring the film as a fund-raiser for WIDR 89.1 FM, WMU's student radio station. Show times are 7 and 9:30 p.m. Friday; 4:30, 7 and 9:30 p.m. Saturday; and 2:30 and 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $5.

In this truly original story directed by Craig Gillespie, a quiet and isolated young man (Gosling) believes he has found love when he orders Bianca, an anatomically correct doll, over the Internet. His family, therapist and fellow townspeople try to help without pushing him over the edge. All the while, a real young woman (Garner) waits for him to realize her true feelings for him. A talented cast and distinctive screenplay make this look at mental illness both insightful and respectful.

The film received a 2008 Oscar nomination for best original screen play and Ryan Gosling was a Golden Globe nominee for best actor in a musical or comedy.

"Lars and the Real Girl" is shown in English. The 2007 film has a run time of 106 minutes and is rated PG-13 for sexual content.

The Little Theatre is located at the corner of Oakland Drive and Oliver Street on WMU's East Campus. Free off-street parking is available behind the theatre.
