Milvern 'Mel' K. Ivey

Milvern "Mel" K. Ivey, a longtime professor of music and choral director at Western Michigan University, died Aug. 19 at his ranch in Evant, Texas. He was 70.
Ivey joined the WMU faculty as an associate professor of music and choral director in 1973 and resigned in 1990 with 17 years service and the faculty rank of professor. Prior to joining the WMU faculty, he served as choral director at Loyola University of New Orleans for five years. Ivey left WMU to serve as professor and chair of conducting and ensembles in the College of Music at the University of North Texas. He retired in 2000.
A past president of the American Choral Conductors Association, Central Division, Ivey also was a member of the American Choral Foundation. He was a guest lecturer and conductor in 15 states, Canada and Mexico.
Ivey received bachelor's and master's degrees in music from North Texas and a doctoral equivalency award in conducting from WMU. He was born in Temple, Texas, April 11, 1938, and is survived by his wife of 36 years, Marsha Faye Ivey.
