Counseling department receives national recognition

Sept. 15, 2008

KALAMAZOO--Western Michigan University has had four counselor education programs reaccredited through 2014 while its counseling psychology program has earned two major awards.

The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs accredited the Department of Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology's doctoral program in counselor education and supervision as well as its master's-level counselor education programs in college counseling, community counseling and school counseling.

The CECP department was initially accredited in 1983, making WMU the first school in Michigan and one of the first in the country to have an accredited counselor education program.

In other recent news, the department's counseling psychology program earned the 2008 Suinn Minority Achievement Award from the American Psychological Association and the Department of the Year Award from the American Psychological Association of Graduate Students.

The Suinn Award recognizes demonstrated excellence in recruiting, retaining and graduating ethnic minority students. It was presented during the psychological association's annual convention Aug. 14 in Boston. Accepting the award on behalf of WMU was Dr. Joseph R. Morris, a former longtime chair and doctoral program training director for the CECP department.

The Department of the Year Award recognizes outstanding commitment toward graduate students and graduate student life. It comes with a $1,500 cash award in recognition of the department's superior assistance and attention to students and its excellent student-faculty relations. Dr. Mary Z. Anderson coordinates WMU's master's degree in counseling psychology, and Drs. Lonnie Duncan and Eric Sauer are co-training directors of the doctoral degree in counseling psychology.
