Composer Olivier Messiaen honored in concert

KALAMAZOO--Western Michigan University's School of Music celebrates the 100th birthday of composer Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) with a concert of his chamber music at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, in the Dalton Center Recital Hall.

Concert tickets are $12, $10 for senior citizens and $5 for students, and are available from the Miller Auditorium Ticket Office at (269) 387-2300 or (800) 228-9858. Tickets also may be purchased at the door.

The program will feature several School of Music professors and guest artists, and will include a performance of "Quartet for the End of Time." Written while Messiaen was being held a prisoner of war, the piece was premiered for an audience of 400 prisoners and German officers. It has since become one of Messiaen's most famous compositions.
