Veterans in Classroom webinar for faculty, staffSept. 16, 2009 KALAMAZOO--All Western Michigan University faculty and staff members are invited to attend a webinar titled "Veterans in the Classroom: What Faculty Need to Know." The program, which will feature two expert panelists, will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, in Room 1354 of Ellsworth Hall. The panelists are Dr. Steven Frantz, system director for student life in the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System, and Donald Pfeffer, director of Higher Education Veterans Programs in the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs. "With more veterans returning to college, faculty and staff members should learn more about the special needs of these students so they can respond in beneficial ways," says Tracey Moon, WMU's military advocate. Moon notes that student veterans bring with them enthusiasm and optimism. But they also bring a host of complex social, family, financial and educational issues that can influence their academic performance and experience. "If faculty and staff understand the special academic needs and transitions of veterans" she says, "they can have a positive influence on a veteran's success in the classroom and beyond."
