Oct. 2, 2009

KALAMAZOO--Kalamazoo native and Houston Symphony Orchestra cellist Jeffrey Butler will perform in a benefit concert honoring his father, former Western Michigan University professor Herbert Butler, Friday, Oct. 9.

The performance will begin at 8:15 p.m. in WMU's Dalton Center Recital Hall. Tickets are $12, $10 for senior citizens and $5 for students, and are available from the Miller Auditorium Ticket Office at (269) 387-2300 or (800) 228-9858. Full-price tickets are also available online at millerauditorium.com. Concert proceeds will support the WMU School of Music Butler Scholarship.

"Remembering Herbert Butler" will recall fond memories of the talented conductor and cellist. Butler will join pianist Yu-Lien The to perform the pieces he heard his father play when he was a child, including the music of Shostakovich, Schumann and Kodaly. Herbert's wife, Mary Butler, a prominent local cellist and music teacher, will sponsor an open reception following the recital.

Jeffrey Butler has been a cellist in the Houston Symphony since 1986. He holds degrees in music performance from Boston University and the University of Michigan, where he was awarded the prestigious Stanley Medal.
