March 5, 2010
KALAMAZOO--Kalamazoo Film Society presents "Broken Embraces," starring Penelope Cruz and Lluis Homar, Friday through Sunday, March 12-14, in the Little Theatre at Western Michigan University.

"Broken Embraces" is a moving story about a successful film director, Mateo Blanco (Homar), who tries to bury his past after losing his sight and the love of his life, Lena (Cruz), in a violent car crash.
Present day, Harry Caine is an attractive blind man who enjoys his life and his work as a writer. But, Harry has a complex and devastating past that he keeps hidden from everyone, including himself. One night, fueled by a tangle of drugs, Harry's assistant asks him about the man who went by the name of Mateo Blanco. Harry recalls the tragic story of his former life--something he had forced from his memory years ago.
Written and directed by Pedro Almodovar, the 2009 film is shown in English and Spanish with English subtitles. It has a run time of 127 minutes, and is rated R for adult language, sexual content and some drug use.
