Bronco volleyball season schedule announced

July 30, 2010

KALAMAZOO--During their upcoming 2010 campaign, Western Michigan University's volleyball Broncos will face three teams that finished last season ranked in the top 25 and seven teams that reached the 2009 NCAA Volleyball Championship Tournament.

Volleyball fans can preview this year's team at the annual Volleyball Alumnae Match at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21, in University Arena. The contest features current team members against greats from past Bronco squads and is open to the public free of charge.

The 2010 schedule is highlighted by a trip to Lincoln, Neb., Sept. 10-11 to play in the Ameritas Players Challenge against long-time NCAA Volleyball power Nebraska, Illinois and Dayton. Nebraska ended 2009 ranked fifth in the country and reached the final eight of the 2009 national tournament. Illinois was No. 10 in 2009 and reached the round of 16 in last year's tournament. Dayton was ranked 25th in 2009 and won one match in the 2009 NCAA Tournament.

WMU begins the season Aug. 27 with a match against Arizona State in the Dayton Flyer Classic. The Broncos finish the weekend, Aug. 28, at the Sports Imports Classic in Columbus with matches against Ohio State and Pittsburgh.

The home opener for the Broncos is Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. against Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne. WMU has a total of 11 home matches in 2010, including other non-conference contests against Notre Dame Oct. 19 and Valparaiso Nov. 27.

WMU begins its MAC championship quest at University Arena Sept. 24-25 against Toledo and Ball State, and closes conference play with four straight at home against Northern Illinois, Nov. 4; Miami, Nov. 6; Central Michigan, Nov. 12; and Eastern Michigan, Nov. 13.

The 2010 MAC Volleyball Championship tournament begins at campus sites Nov. 16 and moves to the SeaGate Centre in Toledo Nov. 19-21.
