James W. McFarlandAug. 20, 2010 Retired Army Col. James W. McFarland, a former assistant professor of military science at Western Michigan University, died March 24. He was 72. McFarland taught military science at WMU from 1968 to 1970. A decorated logistics officer, he served more than 30 years in the Army. He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Texas in 1960 and was named an ROTC Distinguished Military Graduate, and earned a Master of Business Administration degree from WMU in 1970. After retirement, he was the assistant vice president of marketing for a national nonprofit organization that works to create employment opportunities for people with significant disabilities.
