DETROIT--In its first Central Collegiate Hockey Association championship appearance in 25 years, Western Michigan University's hockey team fought back from a two-goal deficit to tie Miami University in the third period, but ultimately fell, 5-2, at Joe Louis Arena Saturday night.

Trailing 2-0 after the first period, the Broncos rallied on goals by Mike Leone in the second period and Dane Walters early in the third to tie the score, 2-2. Miami answered immediately to regain a 3-2 lead and added two more goals in the game's final 10 minutes for the 5-2 final score.

Goalkeeper Jerry Kuhn made 30 saves in net for the Broncos, who were outshot 35-16 in the contest. Shane Berschbach added an assist on Walter's goal for a three-point weekend.

Walters and Dan DeKeyser both earned CCHA All-Tournament recognition for their efforts on the weekend. Walters totaled two goals and an assist in the tournament, while DeKeyser contributed two assists and helped shutdown the University of Michigan's high-powered offense in the Broncos' 5-2 semifinal victory over the Wolverines Friday.

With the victory, Miami, 23-9-6, earned its first CCHA championship in school history and an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament, which begins Friday, March 25. The Broncos, 19-12-10, will tune in to the NCAA Tournament Selection Show Sunday at 11:30 a.m. on ESPN2 to find out if they will receive an at-large bid to the tournament for the first time since 1996.

WMU is 1-1 in CCHA title games. The Broncos' lone CCHA championship came in a 3-1 win over Michigan State March 8, 1986.
