Twenty-three undergraduate students win research awards

KALAMAZOO--Twenty-three Western Michigan University students recently received Undergraduate Research Excellence Awards from the Office of the Vice President for Research.
These students receive $500, which can be used as a stipend or for travel or supplies for a research project or creative activity undertaken under the mentorship of one of WMU's externally funded faculty members.
Undergraduate Research Excellence Awardees
- Lusanni Acosta of Kalamazoo is a civil engineering major and received a grant to study "Numerical Seismic Response Evaluation of Wood Frames" with faculty mentor Dr. Xiaoyun Shao, assistant professor of civil and construction engineering.
- Ahmed Sami Albaghly of Kalamazoo is a mechanical engineering major and received a grant to study "Magnetic Nanoparticle-based Targeted Drug Delivery System Simulation and Design" with faculty mentor Dr. Muralidhar Ghantasala, associate professor of mechanical and aeronautical engineering.
- Abdullah Radhi Alghulam of Kalamazoo is a mechanical engineering major and received a grant to study "Magnetic Nanoparticle-based Targeted Drug Delivery System Simulation and Design" with faculty mentor Dr. Muralidhar Ghantasala, associate professor of mechanical and aeronautical engineering.
- Katherine Ballman of Ann Arbor, Mich., is a physics major and received a grant to study "Fusion in White Dwarfs and Neutron Stars" with faculty mentor Dr. Michael Famiano, assistant professor of physics.
- Kelley Becker of St. Joseph, Mich., is a chemistry major and received a grant to study "Optimization of Lewis Base Conversion of Triglycerides to Methyl Esters" with faculty mentor Dr. Steve Bertman, professor of chemistry.
- Ryan Berndt of Farmington Hills, Mich., is an engineering graphics and design technology major and received a grant to study "Makerbot Additive Manufacturing Machine" with faculty mentor Dr. Jorge Rodriguez, associate professor of industrial and manufacturing engineering.
- Ryan Bezemek of Wayland, Mich., is an engineering graphics and design technology major and received a grant to study "Desktop Additive Manufacturing" with faculty mentor Dr. Jorge Rodriguez, associate professor of industrial and manufacturing engineering.
- Alexander Buist of Wayland, Mich., is a mechanical engineering major and received a grant to study "Hybrid Hydrogen Fuel Cell Power-Train Development" with faculty mentor Dr. Bade Shrestha, associate professor of mechanical and aeronautical engineering.
- Anthony Butchko of Warren, Mich., is an engineering graphics and design technology major and received a grant to study "Desktop Additive Manufacturing" with faculty mentor Dr. Jorge Rodriguez, associate professor of industrial and manufacturing engineering.
- Alejandro Carrasco of Kalamazoo is a mechanical engineering major and received a grant to study "Synthesis and Characterization of Photocatalyst for Environmental Cleanup" with faculty mentor Dr. Pnina Ari-Gur, professor of mechanical and aeronautical engineering.
- Allyson Doyle of Battle Creek, Mich., is a speech pathology major and received a grant to study "Student Research Associate--Test of Integrated Language and Literacy Skills Validation Study" with faculty mentor Dr. Nikola Wolf Nelson, professor of speech pathology and audiology.
- Andrew Gronau of Paw Paw, Mich., is a manufacturing engineering technology major and received a grant to study "Programming and Fixture Design of a Fanue Weld Robot" with faculty mentor Dr. Pavel Ikonomov, associate professor of industrial and manufacturing engineering.
- Ben Himebaugh of Bronson, Mich., is a manufacturing engineering technology major and received a grant to study "Programming and Fixture Design of a Fanue Weld Robot" with faculty mentor Dr. Pavel Ikonomov, associate professor of industrial and manufacturing engineering.
- Cody Kammeraad of Holland, Mich., is a mechanical engineering major and received a grant to study "Hybrid Hydrogen Fuel Cell Power-Train Development" with faculty mentor Dr. Bade Shrestha, associate professor of mechanical and aeronautical engineering.
- Ibraheem Mohammed Kaseb of Kalamazoo is a mechanical engineering major and received a grant to study "Magnetic Nanoparticle-based Targeted Drug Delivery System Simulation and Design" with faculty mentor Dr. Muralidhar Ghantasala, associate professor of mechanical and aeronautical engineering.
- Casey Kick of Iron Mountain, Mich., is a chemical and paper engineering major and received a grant to study "Enhancing Algae Absorption onto Pulp Fibers" with faculty mentor Dr. Raja Aravamuthan, professor of chemical and paper engineering.
- Adrian Sargent of Muskegon Heights, Mich., is a manufacturing engineering technology major and received a grant to study "Programming and Fixture Design of a Fanue Weld Robot" with faculty mentor Dr. Pavel Ikonomov, associate professor of industrial and manufacturing engineering.
