"Beginners"
Sept. 23-25
KALAMAZOO--Kalamazoo Film Society presents Focus Features' "Beginners," starring Ewan McGregor, Christopher Plummer and Melanie Laurent, Friday through Sunday, Sept. 23-25, in the Little Theatre at Western Michigan University.

Show times are 7 and 9:30 p.m. Friday; 4:30, 7 and 9:30 p.m. Saturday; and 2:30, 5 and 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $5.

"Beginners" is an imaginative exploration of the hilarity, confusion and surprises of love through the evolving consciousness of Oliver (McGregor). Oliver meets the irreverent and unpredictable Anna (Laurent) only months after his father Hal (Plummer) passes away. This new love floods Oliver with memories of his father who, following 44 years of marriage, came out of the closet at age 75 to live a full, energized and wonderfully tumultuous gay life. The upheavals of Hal's new honesty, by turns funny and moving, brought father and son closer than they'd ever been. Now Oliver endeavors to love Anna with all the bravery, humor and hope that his father taught him.

Written and directed by Mike Mills, "Beginners" is rated R for adult language and sexuality. The 2011 film has a run time of 105 minutes and is shown in English and French.
