Outlook for holiday shopping seasonNov. 12, 2009 Wrap, suggested lead: The still-sputtering U.S. economy has retailers concerned. As Mark Schwerin reports, another decline in holiday spending is predicted for this year. (1:05/Schwerin/STD) It won't be as bad as last year's 3.4 percent drop in spending. But holiday buying is expected to dip again this year, says Dr. Barbara Frazier, a WMU associate professor of family and consumer sciences. (:37/Frazier.........................................................right now.) Frazier says holiday shopping is predicted to end up at about 2005 levels, with consumers spreading out their buying and often paying with cash. From Western Michigan University, I'm Mark Schwerin. Actualities: CUT ONE: Frazier says consumers are approaching the holiday shopping season with concerns about employment and a more restrained attitude toward credit. (:24/Frazier...........................................................this year.) CUT TWO: Frazier says many experts predict there could be a permanent change in the mindsets of many consumers toward more restrained spending. (:40/Frazier.......................................................the holiday.) CUT THREE: Frazier says retailers are watching their inventories very closely and may make cutbacks elsewhere, possibly resulting in some longer lines and less personal service.
