The way forward in Afghanistan

Nov. 19, 2009

MP3 audio file

Wrap, suggested lead: Military advisers have laid out several plans for the war in Afghanistan, recommending that President Obama send anywhere from 10,000 to 40,000 additional troops. As Mark Schwerin reports, another option might be to withdraw American soldiers.

High-ranking officials, both inside and outside the military, support sending additional troops to Afghanistan. But the Afghan government, led by Hamid Karziai, has not proven that it can manage the country, says Dr. Lawrence Ziring, a WMU professor emeritus of political science and expert on the region.

(:36/Ziring.......................................................so necessary.)

Ziring says only the people in the region can deal with the complex problems that have destabilized Afghanistan and Pakistan. From Western Michigan University, I'm Mark Schwerin.

Actualities:

CUT ONE: Ziring says a surge in U.S. troops recommended by Gen. Stanley McChrystal will not bring about lasting stability and security in Afghanistan.

(:43/Ziring..................................................manifested today.)

CUT TWO: Ziring says Afghanistan has been at war since its monarchy was overthrown in 1973 and has been subjected to intervention after intervention from outside forces.

(:38/Ziring.....................................................totally destroyed.)

CUT THREE: Ziring says problems in the area are further compounded by the dispute between Pakistan and India over Kashmir.

(:42/Ziring....................................................Kashmir dispute.)
