MP3 audio file

Memorial Day weekend marks the beginning of summer outings. As Mark Schwerin reports, people in Southwest Michigan can expect to see a warm summer this year.

(1:03/Schwerin/STD)

Remember the cool summer of 2009? Well, get ready for a hard blast of reality. This summer should pack above-normal temperatures, says Dr. Robert Ruhf, a senior research associate in the WMU Mallinson Institute for Science Education, who has a degree in meteorology.

(:36/Ruhf................................................seeing that.)

Ruhf says last summer definitely had below-normal temperatures. From Western Michigan University, I'm Mark Schwerin.

Actualities:

CUT ONE: Ruhf says it took until mid-June for snow in Canada to melt to the same point it did this year in mid-to-late May.

(:32/Ruhf..................................................in Canada.)

CUT TWO: Ruhf says we're already seeing summerlike conditions and the overall trend should continue, with a few cold snaps here and there.

(:42/Ruhf.............................................quite different.)

CUT THREE: Ruhf says another factor in the warm weather scenario is the lingering effects of an El Niño pattern and the warming of the Pacific Ocean's surface.

(:32/Ruhf..........................................La Niña pattern.)
