Scholarships

Students at Western Michigan University are often recognized for outstanding work in the Department of Biological Sciences. Scholarships and awards vary in size, qualifications and application process.

Department of Biological Sciences awards

Colin J. Gould Memorial Scholarship

The Colin J Gould memorial Scholarship is based on the following criteria:

  • Biological sciences major
  • Sophomore or junior standing that have completed at least three biological sciences courses at WMU
  • A minimum overall GPA of 3.5

Frank Hinds Zoology Award

This award was established in honor of Dr. Frank Hinds, a dedicated professor who served WMU for 35 years. The award of $250 is granted to a declared departmental major of sophomore or junior standing who has:

  • A GPA of 3.5 or better.
  • An outstanding overall record.
  • Completed at least three courses in biological sciences at WMU.

Leo C. Vander Beek Graduate Student Plant Biology Award

This yearly award shall be used as a recruiting tool for students seeking graduate training in plant biology. This award is in addition to any teaching or research assistantships given to the student.

Margaret Thomas DuMond Scholarship Award

This award was established in honor of Mrs. DuMond, an alumna of the department, by her husband. It is available to upper-class biology majors who plan to become teachers. The award is granted annually to a student:

  • Of junior or senior status.
  • Who demonstrates career potential and financial need.
  • With a GPA of at least 3.5.

Merrill Wiseman Award in Microbiology

This award, named in honor of a distinguished professor who was on the Department of Biological Sciences faculty for 40 years, is made annually to an outstanding student in the field of microbiology.

Charles River Life Sciences Scholarship

(formerly: MPI Undergraduate Research Award (2014-2020), Charles River Research Life Science Award (2021), Betina Chapman Award (2022))

This award provides funding to cover the cost of materials used for student education and research projects in the Department of Biological Sciences at Western Michigan University.

  • Biological sciences major
  • Undergraduate (by application)
  • A minimum overall GPA of 3.0

Research Experiences for Undergraduates Award

This program allows undergraduates from WMU and other colleges and universities from around the country to participate in interdisciplinary research in environmental signal transduction. The research experience at WMU includes:

  • Career-oriented discussions.
  • Considerations of scientific ethics and integrity.
  • Participation in a research project.
  • Presentation and discussion series on the process of sciences.
  • Research seminars.

Honors program and awards

An honors program is available through the Lee Honors College to students who demonstrate superior ability during their first or second year of college work.

International study scholarships

The College of Arts and Sciences invites qualified undergraduates to apply for funds to help support their study abroad experience.

Post-baccalaureate scholarships

U.S. Army Healthcare Scholarship

This scholarship provides full tuition, books and a stipend for medical, veterinary and dental accredited schools.
