Western Michigan University's journalism program provides students training in Associated Press-style writing and focuses on investigative multimedia journalism. It combines a liberal arts background with professional training, and is designed to prepare informed and responsible journalists to assume the challenging role demanded of them in the 21st century.

As a journalism student at WMU, you will gain a thorough background in news reporting and writing, journalism law and journalism ethics. You will learn communication theory, journalism research, feature and article writing, reviewing for the press, newspaper writing and reporting, reporting public affairs, broadcast journalism, literary journalism, mass communication and news, and documentary in film and television.

Good writing skills are essential to enter and succeed in this program.

Beyond the classroom

If you choose this major, you will be encouraged to get practical experience outside of the classrooms and labs. The University will help you learn to market yourself through networking and developing cover letters, resumes and portfolios, so you will be better poised to obtain an internship when you are ready. You can also gain valuable experience by contributing to the Western Herald student newspaper or WIDR radio station, or joining Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society or Lambda Pi Eta communication honor society. Consider making a difference in an area you are passionate about while honing your skills by volunteering as a writer or editor in a nonprofit organization.
