The freshly renovated 28,000 square foot industrial design facilities accommodate all manner of contemporary and traditional processes while remaining committed to providing a healthy, non-toxic working environment. The Product Design program equips Sophomore, Junior, and Senior Studios students with a personal workspace that includes adjustable height desks and Mac Pro computers.
All prospective product design program students must first apply to Western Michigan University through the Office of Admissions. If you have questions about how to apply online, please call (269) 387-2000. Applicants must also apply to the program directly through SlideRoom.

SlideRoom charges a $10 fee at the time of a completed applicant’s submission. The product design program is not yet authorized to accept international applicants.
Product design APPLICATION process
Statement of intent
The purpose of this statement of intent is to give us a sense of your creative background, design aspirations, and career goals. The statement should illustrate your understanding of the practice of product design, the profession, and how the product design program at Western Michigan University can help you achieve your personal and professional goals. Statements should be between 400-600 words.
The portfolio is an essential piece of how we get to know you as a designer and artist and evaluate your skills and talent. A complete portfolio includes 8-10 original (not copied) works created within the last 2 years. Your portfolio should showcase your design and artistic strengths and abilities. The pieces in your portfolio can be assignments from art and design classes; we strongly encourage you to include pieces that reflect your individual ideas, talents, and inspirations.
A recommendation form is a required piece of the application process that should be completed by a person who is familiar with your artistic abilities (i.e., an art instructor, counselor or teacher). The recommendation form is sent through SlideRoom to the person of your choosing’s email.
You must submit your application and portfolio prior to attending an Interview Day. You will be contacted for an Interview Day date after you submit your portfolio in Slideroom.
