Gabriela León: Hechicería Casera

Gabriela León (Cuautla de Morelos, Mexico 1973). Visual artist and writer. She works with different disciplines creating hybrid projects. B.F.A Universidad de las Americas (UDLA), Puebla, Mexico (1998) and attended several workshops in different disciplines.  

Her work has been shown in solo and selected group exhibitions in Mexican and international forums, festivals and art exhibits: New York Photo Festival, 10 Bienal Habana; University of California Santa Cruz and Riverside Galleries; MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) in Tucson Arizona, MACO (Museum of Contemporary Art Oaxaca), Setagaya Museum, Tokyo, CFMAB (Centro Fotográfico Manuél Álvarez Bravo), Oaxaca, Illuseum Art Space, Amsterdam, among others.

Her work had received the following grants: Cultural Oaxaca State Grant to support local artists production C11 and C12 (20011 and 2012); the Tierney Foundation fellowship for photography (2010); the State Funds for Culture and the Arts (FOESCA in Oaxaca, 2008 and Puebla, 1999) and the National Funds for Culture and Art (FONCA in 2000) for Literature. Her exhibition: ‘Sunday walk to the zocalo of Oaxaca’ received a grand from the University of California Institute for Mexico and the United States (UC Mexus 2007). Her project ‘Pulchrus Corpus’ was sponsored by the Mexican Institute of Youth (2000). 

She founded and is the director of the lab: La Perrera in Oaxaca. An artistic project that works as a platform, producer, curatorial and pedagogical experiment. La Perrera with the project ‘Transbordador Pocha-Perrera’, received the international grand NALAC mex-us to collaborate with Guillermo Gómez Peña and La Pocha Nostra (2010 and 2012).

In 2007 she is artist in residence (Performance) in Tucson (MOCA), and in 2005 in Varanasi, India, (Sculpture and Installation) at the Ram Chatpar Slip Nyas Museum.

She has given lectures of her work at the School of Visual Arts en NYC, the Marymount Manhattan College en NYC (2009) and the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM 2012), Mexico city, among others.

She published two books of poems and her poems have been published in several collections. She is also co-writer of two children books. At the present time she is working on her first novel.

Lives and works in Oaxaca with her xoloitzcuintle dog and two cats. She is deeply interested in gardens.
