The Interdisciplinary Research Initiative Award promotes collaborative and interdisciplinary research in the College of Arts and Sciences at Western Michigan University. Its purpose is to nurture and develop collaborative interdisciplinary endeavors that culminate in the submission of competitive interdisciplinary extramural grant proposals. First-time collaborators are welcome.
Up to $5,000 per award may be provided. This amount may be used for research supplies, travel to research meetings, student stipend supplementation and/or for any other purposes that support the project goals. Funds may not be used for faculty salary.
Funds will be disbursed on the first business day after July 1 for the fiscal year for which the award is made. Failure of any member of the project team to submit required reports will result in ineligibility for any future award.
All awards are subject to final budgetary approval and authorization by the dean of the College.
Interdisciplinary Research Initiative Award applications will be reviewed by faculty from the College of Arts and Sciences Research, Scholarly and Creative Activities committee. Awards will be granted to collaborative interdisciplinary teams based on:
- The potential for obtaining external funding.
- The quality and clarity of ideas presented in the application.
- The quality of the collaborative and interdisciplinary interactions.
Proposals should identify a team member from within the College of Arts and Sciences to be the point of contact should that proposal be selected for funding.
Queries should be directed to Dr. Heather Petcovic.
