Richard G. Haworth, B.B.A.'64
Outstanding Service Award
Richard Haworth began his career in 1964 when he joined the family-owned business as assistant sales manager before getting drafted into the U.S. Army in 1967. After being honorably discharged as a First Lieutenant in 1969, Haworth returned to the company as executive vice president, responsible for manufacturing and new product development.
In 1976, Haworth became the company’s president and chief executive officer. His love for new ideas kept him involved in product development and market introduction, resulting in new products such as the industry’s first electrified, panel-based office furniture system. Nineteen of his inventions have resulted in published patents.
In 1994, Haworth was named chairman and CEO, and throughout the next 14 years, continued to build the company into a global, multi product-line company. Today, the company has manufacturing plants and showrooms in most major American, European and Asian cities, as well as a global dealer network.
He continues as Haworth chairman emeritus and a board member while remaining engaged with customers, product development, engineering and community projects. Haworth received his B.B.A. from Western Michigan University in 1964 and an honorary doctorate degree from Hope College in 2013. He has served as a WMU trustee and sits on the board of advisors for the Mackinac Center for Public Policy, among many other community initiatives.
