Lieutenant Colonel Steve Welch received his reserve commission in 1984 at Western Michigan University and graduated magna cum laude from Great Lakes Christian College. His military career started in 1978 when he enlisted for 4 years of active duty. At Ft. Leonardwood, Missouri, he completed basic training and was AIT honor graduate at the 51R, electricians course. During his active duty time he was assigned to the third Armor Division, Hanau Germany, and the 43rd Engineer Battalion (Combat Heavy), Ft. Benning, Georgia.
After receiving his commission, he was assigned to the 415th Civil Affairs Battalion in Kalamazoo, where he held positions of increasing responsibility. He then accepted an assignment to the 354th Civil Affairs Brigade in Riverdale, Maryland, where he held the team chief position of the Infrastructure Team. He has deployed to Bosnia, Kosovo and Afghanistan. He currently is assigned as the G9 at the 46th Military Police Command, Michigan Army National Guard in Lansing.
Lieutenant Colonel Welch is a recipient of the Bronze Star, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Service Medal with M device, Army Service Ribbon, Army Overseas Service Ribbon, Army Reserve Components Overseas Training Ribbon, United Nations Medal – Bosnia, NATO Medal and the NATO Afghanistan Service Medal.
Lieutenant Colonel Welch is a native of the Kalamazoo area. He and his wife Cathy have been married for 35 years and have six children. He currently is a team leader for Pfizer working within the Utilities and Facilities Group.
