Haworth College of Business - Outstanding Young Alumni Award 2012
Joel Mueller’s entrepreneurial story starts in high school when he developed companies as a teenager and grew them into some of the most popular and well respected companies in their niches. While earning his B.B.A. at WMU, he was both a full-time student and a full-time CEO.
Mueller’s most publicly recognized company, MacUpdate, was founded when he was 16 with the intention of being Mueller’s outlet for his passion in online communication and the Macintosh computer. It has since been recognized by Inc. Magazine as a Top 500 fastest growing company in the U.S. in 2007, 2008 and 2009 (#319 in 2007, #114 in 2008 and #233 in 2009). It was also ranked as the fifth fastest growing company in Michigan and the twenty-second fastest growing software company in the country by Inc. Magazine.
MacUpdate.com is currently ranked as the second most popular Mac-only software community on the Internet, reaching over seven million visits each month – second only to Apple.com. It is one of the largest distribution points for Mac software developers, having sold hundreds of thousands of copies of third party applications directly from its "nearly hidden" online storefront.
Due to Mueller’s entrepreneurial success, he was named an Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year finalist in 2011.
Mueller is interested in helping people in situations of poverty and spends much of his time traveling the world and living in different cultures.
