Distinguished Speaker Series

The head of an advocacy organization working to build sustainable diversity in business will be featured in the next Distinguished Speaker Series presentation. Gloria Castillo, president and CEO of Chicago United, will give a talk titled “Inclusion: Culture in Action in the Corporate Environment” at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 9, in 2000 Schneider Hall.

National Champions

A team of Western Michigan University students won the 2014 National Grocers Association University Case Competition, earning the top spot for creating a locally focused marketing strategy for an independent grocer in Ohio.

Gutierrez to Speak

Continuing a tradition of bringing top industry leaders to Kalamazoo, the 2014 Western Michigan University Food Marketing Conference will feature former U.S. Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez as well as other industry executives, including Meijer President J.K. Symancyk. The conference annually attracts more than 500 industry leaders to the Kalamazoo area from across the United States.

Advance Strategically

Thirty-nine students representing 11 teams will compete in progressive rounds of competition in the first WMU MBA Strategic Management Case Competition. Examining a business case on a company’s sustainability strategy, four teams will advance to the final round of competition, which will be held on Saturday, March 29, at 10:30 a.m., in 2150 Schneider Hall and is open to the public.

It's a Whole New Ball Game

Photo of Fenway ParkIt's been 15 years since the college started offering a course in sports marketing. Spearheaded by now retired Dr. Ed Mayo, the college initially offered one course. Recently, a second and third course were added, and students taking the sequence earn a specialization in sports marketing, which is led now by John Weitzel, master faculty specialist of marketing. Mayo and Weitzel continue to team up on projects and recently earned an Honorable Mention Award from USA Today Sports for one of their two research presentations.
