WMU’s Specialty Program in Alcohol and Drug Abuse (SPADA)

SPADA students at Western benefit from:

Flexible learning

SPADA courses are available both asynchronous online and in-person, offering the flexibility to meet various lifestyle needs.

Job growth

Addiction counselor rates are expected to increase by 18% from 2022-2032, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, which is higher than other occupations.

Scholarship opportunities

SPADA students also benefit from scholarship opportunities and a certificate that comes at a much lower overall cost than a graduate degree.

MCBAP certification

SPADA students can obtain the required state certification hours as they learn, while also preparing for the MCBAP test needed for professional work.

About Western’s Specialty Program in Alcohol and Drug Abuse

WMU’s Specialty Program in Alcohol and Drug Abuse (SPADA) is the first of its kind in Michigan and the first university-based training clinic in the state to address substance use disorders.

By offering both asynchronous online classes and in-person education, SPADA is ideal for experienced working professionals as well as those who are just starting their careers.

As a Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals (MCBAP) approved training program, SPADA students will receive the required MCBAP continuing education hours while pursuing their degree. As an added benefit, WMU’s SPADA certificates help to prepare students for MCBAP’s certification test.

SPADA courses examine biological, psychological and sociological aspects of substance use, giving students a comprehensive perspective, enabling them to go on to careers in:

  • psychology
  • social work
  • public health
  • corrections
  • and other relevant fields
