Dr. Charlotte Thralls is a professor of English at Western Michigan University specializing in rhetoric and writing studies.

Thralls has also held tenured appointments at Iowa State University and at Utah State University. With research interests in the intersections of rhetorical theory, cultural studies and writing, she has taught courses in professional writing, composition, writing studies theory and research, modern rhetorical theory, rhetorical analysis, the history of rhetoric, cultural studies, and media analysis.

Thralls is the author of numerous articles and co-editor of Communicative Practices in Workplaces and the Professions and Professional Communication: The Social Perspective. Her research in rhetoric and professional communication has been recognized with awards from National Council of Teachers of English (Best Collection of Essays), the Association for Business Communication (Best Article; 2001 Researcher of the Year) and Utah State University (Humanist [researcher] of the Year, College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences). She was founding co-editor of the Journal of Business and Technical Communication and former co-editor of Technical Communication Quarterly.

In teaching, Thralls received the Iowa State University Louis Thompson Distinguished Teaching Award and an Iowa Legislature Teaching Excellence Award. Thralls  serves on various councils and committees for national organizations and on the editorial boards of several journals in professional communication.

During her career, she also has held various administrative and faculty development positions:

  • Associate Dean of the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences at Utah State.
  • Director of Graduate Studies, Director of Undergraduate and Graduate Internships, Coordinator of the Rhetoric and Professional Communication area, and Faculty Fellow with the Center for Teaching Excellence at Iowa State University.

Thralls also serves as an undergraduate advisor for the Department of English.
